Don’t let the Pandemic distract you

Unemployment in North Carolina in July 2020 was in the 8.5% range.

The Pandemic has shutdown the ability for us to network IRL (in real life). However, you still need to find a job.

If you want to overcome your job search challenges you will need to overcome the restrictions the Pandemic has created.

Here are a few ideas to consider:

  1. First of all – invest the right amount of time in your job as a job seeker. This should be at least 8 hours a day. Break it up, do lunch, get a snack, do other things that you need to do, maybe not the stuff you want to do.
  2. Your next great job will come from a conversation, likely from someone you have not yet met. Therefore, every day you need to find ways to meet and connect with someone new. Maybe 3-4 new people every day. Be imaginative, you can’t meet them in person, but maybe you can meet thru your current networks. Your Friends, Neighbors, Peers, LinkedIn Connections, Facebook Friends, etc. Maybe meet new people who are relevant to you thru Meetup or Eventbrite events. Every time you meet someone new, connect with them on LinkedIn, and see if you can pull them into a conversation.
  3. Do more research. Research can create new ideas. Research can uncover opportunities and new people you could get into conversations with.
  4. Don’t rely on voice mail or email to tell people you need/want help. Use these communication tools to pull people into Phone or better yet, Zoom conversations. In these eyeball to eyeball or ear to ear conversations, you can ask questions and try to pull the individual into a deeper conversation and possibly uncover someone else they feel you should talk with.

Please don’t use the Pandemic as an execuse for not finding your next great job. Use more imaginative and innovative ideas to pull the right people into the right conversations.
